MSA — Metropolitan Statistical Area — is an urban region with a population of more than 50,000 people. It's defined around a core with a relatively dense population and high economic activity. There are 382 MSAs.
Unicorns are private companies valued at more than $1B. The data came from Wall Street Journal Billion Dollar Startup Club. The Inc magazine annually lists 5000 US companies that grew the fastest over the previous three years. The map shows the number of unique companies that featured in this list between 2009 and 2016. Fortune 1000 is an annual list, compiled by the Fortune magazine, of the largest US companies by revenue. The map shows a count of all the companies that featured at least once in this list between 1996 and 2014. Inc 5000 and Fortune 1000 data came from multiple public sources in addition to the respective magazines.
